DO YOUR FEET HURT DURING OR AFTER DANCING?

Here is an analogy. Would you put poorly fitting tyres on your car? Similarly, when you dance, your feet are your tyres so look after them.

Pressure points in every pair of shoes will be different, so foot soreness is easily avoided.

If you are dancing for long periods of time or on floors in community centres that are not purpose built, simply change shoes every hour! It is good practice to always take two pairs to class or events.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO MAKE YOUR DANCE SHOES LAST LONGER

Avoid using wire brushes to clean the bottom of shoes. It will pull off the green hide (suede). To remove the build up of wax, take the following steps:

1. Cover sole of shoe with brown paper.

2. Heat iron to maximum temperature. Press steam function onto brown paper 3 times.

3. Remove paper and whilst wax is warm, rub sole with the finest sand paper available in CIRCULAR motion.

Always take fine sand paper with you to dance classes or events. If the floor is too waxy, simply rub sandpaper in circular motion!

WHAT YOU NEED TO ASK WHEN PURCHASING YOUR DANCE SHOES

Is the lining leather? Synthetic linings cause sweating, blisters and do not mould around the foot.

Has the upper been stitched to the lining? Avoid wearing shoes that have been glued as they will split easily .

Is there arch support inside the shoe and double padding under the ball of the foot?

Does the heel height allow you to walk without “rolling” your ankles? If you can’t walk in the shoe do not expect to dance in it!

WHAT IS BEST IF YOU HAVE BUNIONS OR OTHER FOOT ISSUES

The T bar style works best for bunions and most foot ailments as it forces the foot to stay back in the cup of the heel. The dancer needs to avoid pushing too far forward as is often the case in an open shoe therefore exacerbating the growth of the bunion.

Most importantly, have a proper fitting as painful feet do not equal dancing enjoyment!

What beginner dancers need to know

You would not play golf in a football boot, so once you have committed to dance lessons do not think that a street shoe Is going to be kind to your feet.

So you finally organise the dance lessons and it’s time to purchase your shoes, but - you haven’t decided which style you want to continue learning.

Traditionally, an open shoe works best for Latin, closed for Modern/Ballroom.

Here’s a hint: buy a shoe with a peep toe to which is comfortable for all styles until you decide which one is your favourite.
